History of the Peloponnesian War

Thucydides of Athens was born about 471 BC. He had been composing his famous history of the Peloponnesian War, with its hopes and horrors, triumphs and disasters, in full detail from first-hand knowledge, along with the accounts of others. The war was really three conflicts with one uncertain peace after the first; and Thucydides had not unified them into one account when death came sometime before 396. So his work was left unfinished and as a whole unrevised. Yet in brilliance of description and depth of insight this history has no superior.

Alexander the Great: A New History

This book combines traditional scholarship with contemporary research to offer an innovative treatment of one of history's most famous figures- Alexander the Great. It offers a collection of views on aspects of the history and life of Alexander, from the background of the Ancient Macedonian and Greece through his military achievements to his private life. Topics covered include Alexander’s religious views, his entourage during his campaign East, and his sexuality. Reappraisals of the Macedonian army and Macedonian relations with the Greeks complement these new approaches to Alexander’s reign. The influence of his legacy, and later representations in art and cinema, are also discussed.

Ancient China and Its Enemies: The Rise of Nomadic Power in East Asian History

By investigating the formation of nomadic cultures, by analyzing the evolution of patterns of interaction along China's frontiers, and by exploring how this interaction was recorded in historiography, this book looks at the origins of the cultural and political tensions between these two civilizations-Chinese and Nomadic- through the first millennium BC. The main purpose of the book is to analyze ethnic, cultural, and political frontiers between nomads and Chinese in the historical contexts that led to their formation, and to look at cultural perceptions of 'others' as a function of the same historical process.

The Peloponnesian War

This book presents a new account of the Peloponnesian War, a vicious war of Greek against Greek, Athenian against Spartan. Kagan believes that the Peloponnesian War is a powerful tale as an extraordinary human tragedy, recounting the rise and fall of a great empire, the clash between two very different societies and ways of life, the interplay of intelligence and chance in human affairs, and the role of brilliantly gifted individuals, as well as masses of people in determining the course of events while subject to the limitations imposed upon them by nature, by fortune, and by one another. It is of a dark time whose lessons still resonate today.
