Course Description

This course firstly offers an overview of the historical evolution and practices of contemporary diplomacy. It then discusses the various dimension of modern diplomacy including diplomatic theories, diplomacy law, diplomatic institutions and personnel, and diplomatic skills and techniques by using both historical and contemporary examples and cases, thus familiarizing students with both the forms and contents of modern diplomacy in a broad historical, theoretical, and empirical context.  The course will use an integrated approach to teach diplomatic theory and practice.

The Oxford Handbook of Modern Diplomacy

This book aims to display the importance of diplomacy along with its attendant capacity for adaptation. It is divided into 6 parts. Part 1 sets the scene for the discussion of diplomacy by examining the nature and form of diplomacy. Part 2 focuses on the main actors such as the political actors, the bureaucracy, international organizations, etc. Part 3 discusses modes of practice such as bilateral diplomacy, multilateral diplomacy, conference diplomacy, commission diplomacy, etc. Part 4 focuses on tools and instruments such as economy, culture, international law, etc. Part 5 deals with specific issue areas such as security, trade, food, etc. Part 6 presents case studies.

This book provides a thematic overview of diplomacy and its study. It consists of four parts. Part 1 focuses on diplomatic concepts and theories, including theories, conceptual history, statecraft, foreign policy, agency, culture, arts, ethics, etc. Part 2 expands on diplomatic institutions, including embassies, consulates, corps, international law, etc. Part 3 expands on diplomatic relations, covering power and states, especially diplomacy in regional areas. Part 4 presents types of diplomatic engagement, such as public diplomacy, crisis diplomacy, conference diplomacy, citizen diplomacy, celebrity diplomacy, military diplomacy, sports diplomacy, science diplomacy, etc.
