Introduction to Cities: How Place and Space Shape Human Experience

This book provides an introduction to the nature of cities. It covers a number of cities, ranging from those in the West, such as Berlin and Chicago, to those in Asia, such as Shanghai and Mumbai. It argues that cities are places that provide three fundamental things that are important to human life and experience- the sense of community, the sense of identity, and the sense of security, that cities are spaces that offer a way to configure and shape the material and natural environment of which they are composed. It presents how cities have changed over time, as well as how theories about cities and their development have changed.
