ATTORNEY EDITOR ENHANCEMENTS

  • West Key Number System: The West Key Number System® is the de facto classification system for all American law. Thomson Reuters® attorney editors index cases under more than 360 topics and 110,000 points of law, allowing you to quickly find other cases that address your exact point of law in any jurisdiction. Topic and Key Numbers also help you find cases stating or applying a legal concept, even if those terms aren’t in the opinion.
  • Thomson Reuters headnotes: We summarize the points of law within a case in a headnote that either lays out the blackletter law or applies the law to the facts of the case — making it easier to review the key issues of an opinion. Each year, we categorize roughly 500,000 headnotes into the Key Number System. We also incorporate legal synonyms, acronyms, generic names, terms of art, and the legal relationship of the parties into headnotes, so your searches can retrieve on-point cases that you may otherwise miss.
  • Thomson Reuters annotations and indexes: Our comprehensive collection of state and federal annotated statutes and the industry’s most comprehensive annotated CFR make the law easier to find and interpret. Our notes of decisions (or “annotations”) provide summaries of important cases interpreting a statute, for the full picture of how the courts construe and apply the statute. Searching annotated statutes and regulations will retrieve relevant documents that a text-only search might miss. Westlaw Classic is also the only online provider of alphabetical indexes for statutes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, USCA, and the CFR. With 20 million references categorized by topic, our online indexes provide quick links to the most relevant statutes and regulations — without having to run a search.
