This course combines counseling and clinical psychology. The counseling component examines the theories, methods, and practice of counselling and psychotherapy in different settings such as couples, families, adults, children, and groups. The clinical component focuses on the clinical characteristics of many major classes of psychiatric disorders and the theoretical assumptions when understanding and treating pathological behaviors.
This book introduces the major systems of psychotherapy, including psychoanalytic Psychotherapies, Adlerian Psychotherapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, Existential Psychotherapy, Gestalt Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Family Therapy, Meditation and Psychotherapy, Positive Psychotherapy, Integrative Psychotherapies, and Multicultural Theories of Psychotherapy. It concludes with an array of contemporary challenges and controversies- the mental-health workforce; physicians, medications, and psychotherapy; the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5), the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), and Research Domain Criteria (RDoC); empirically supported treatments (ESTs); phones, computers, and the Internet; the Goldwater rule; and cultures; etc.
