GEC2111 Social History of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area: Home

Course Description

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area is one of the most important economic belts in China and the world. It is vital to understand the history of the Bay Area since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, because this long period of history not only reflects how the local society shaped its national image and expressed its own identity, but also records China's interaction with the world. This course aims to explore the historical process of social and cultural developments of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao since the Ming and Qing Dynasties from perspectives of global history and regional history, focusing on the convergence of Sino-west cultures, local and national identity, political system, commerce and trade, religion and festivals, as well as migrant society.

Recommended Books

Down to Earth: The Territorial Bond in South China

This collection of essays comprises a series of historical and ethnographic studies of the Pearl River Delta from late imperial times through the 1940’s. All the essays draw on field experience, and attempt to reconstruct the civilizing process in south China in the late imperial period in which the local inhabitants, both elites and commoners, used symbolic and instrumental means to become part of Chinese culture and polity, arguing that local society in the Delta was integrated into the Chinese state through a series of changes that involved constant redefinition of lineages, territories, and ethnic identities.

A Macao Narrative

First published in 1978, this narrative is an exceptional history of Macao. A genuine affection for Portuguese culture does at times emerge in this book as a kind of homage. Austin Coates’ approach to history is closer to traditional narrative and appears immune from the multifaceted and multi-voiced discourse of postmodernism. The author manages to keep focused, to keep a sense of the greatness of the Portuguese achievements in the Far East and of Macao’s significance in this enterprise, no matter how censurable the more negative effects of Western colonization.

Wartime Macau: Under the Japanese Shadow

This book investigates how Macau escaped from direct Japanese invasion and occupation. After introducing the background of the broader diplomatic setting, the book then offers complementary albeit alternative takes upon wartime economic management, examines the plight of two sections of the refugee community, both arriving from Hong Kong and surviving upon relief administered by the British consulate, and observes the role of the Allies in the anti-Japanese resistance. The book reveals that the occupation of Macau was not in Japan’s best interest because the Portuguese administration in Macau posed no threat to Japan’s control over the China coast and acted as a listening post to monitor Allied activities.

Pacific Crossing: California Gold, Chinese Migration, and the Making of Hong Kong

This book charts the rise of Chinese Gold Mountain firms engaged in all kinds of transpacific trade, especially the lucrative export of prepared opium and other luxury goods. It attempts to examine the relationship between Hong Kong and emigration from different vantage points- the Chinese emigrants, not only as laborers, but also as traders, entrepreneurs, and investors. In presenting Hong Kong as an “in-between place” of repeated journeys and continuous movement, this book tries to clarify how deeply embedded Hong Kong was in the lives of individual migrants and the Chinese diaspora as a whole.
