Recommended Books

The Oxford Handbook of Political Science

This handbook draws from the ten-volume series of The Oxford Handbooks of Political Science. It provides a concise and solid introduction to political science and its ten sub-disciplines, which are political theory; political institutions; political behavior; comparative politics; international relations; political economy; law and politics; public policy; contextual political analysis; and political methodology. In the introductory part, the editor Goodin discusses the past, present, and future of the discipline. In the main body of the book, 67 of the top political scientists worldwide survey recent developments in those fields and present 52 essays altogether to provide penetrating introductions in those fields.

A Theory of Global Governance

This book offers a major new theory of global governance, explaining both its rise and what many see as its current crisis. Part One identifies the core institutional features of the global governance system and its behavioral implications. Part Two concerns the empirical issues, and derives propositions from the theory to explain societal politicization and counter-institutionalization, and how they can lead to either a deepening or a decline of global governance. Part Three discusses that global governance will not necessarily disappear as a consequence of its current shortcomings. It is also argued that the analysis of some of the most pressing questions requires a paradigmatic shift in international relations.

Six Faces of Globalization: Who Wins, Who Loses, and Why it Matters

Instead of picking sides, Six Faces of Globalization guides us through six competing narratives about the virtues and vices of globalization, giving each position its due and showing how each deploys sophisticated arguments and compelling evidence. Both globalization's boosters and detractors will come away with their eyes opened. By isolating the fundamental value conflicts driving disagreement- growth versus sustainability, efficiency versus social stability- and showing where rival narratives converge, the book begins with unscrambling globalization narratives, then moves on to discuss the six narratives of globalization, and how to work with globalization narratives.

Innovation and China's Global Emergence

This book provides insights into the challenges and driving forces of the evolution of China’s innovation economy. Part One explores the global implications of China’s rise as an innovative nation in terms of international tensions and the prospects for future cooperation. Part Two contains contributions that address the Chinese experience with innovation in terms of industrial policies and global value chains. The book suggests that China has benefited significantly from international collaboration in innovation and new opportunities for accessing the global market and new sources of technology. Further, industrial policies have been used to promote productivity for the sake of achieving high-quality growth.
