This course provides an overview of classic and current issues in the study of human memory. Topics include implicit memory (e.g., priming) and explicit memory systems (e.g., episodic memory). We will dive deeper into the processes of memory acquisition, storage and retrieval and the techniques to research these processes using neuropsychological tests (e.g., retrieval practice – massed vs spaced, directed forgetting, recognition versus recall tests). We will focus on theories of forgetting (i.e., the trace decay theory, proactive and retroactive interference, retrieval competition) and discuss memory failure in regard to healthy aging and amnesia (e.g., induced by epilepsy, dementia). We will talk about the role of sleep in memory, memory enhancement techniques, and reconstructive memory in relation to the fallibility of eyewitness testimonies: the misinformation effect and confabulation.
