A Global History of Trade and Conflict Since 1500

This book explains the causes and consequences of the intersection of two transformative global forces - trade and conflict – since 1500. In nine detailed historical case studies, ranging over 500 years and spanning the globe, the contributors explore the dynamic between trade and conflict and examine the consequences of their intersection, direct and indirect, immediate and long term, anticipated and unexpected, transformative and destructive. The contributors break new ground by collectively showing that trade and conflict have been reciprocally constitutive: trade sparks conflict and conflict in turn provokes the adaptation of trade.

Chow Chop Suey: Food and the Chinese American Journey

This book uses cooking to trace different stages of the Chinese community's footing in the larger white society. Mendelson begins with the arrival of men from the poorest district of Canton Province during the Gold Rush. She describes the formation of American Chinatowns and examines the curious racial dynamic underlying the purposeful invention of hybridized Chinese American food. Mendelson then follows the eventual abolition of anti-Chinese immigration laws and the many demographic changes that transformed the face of Chinese cooking in America during and after the Cold War. Mendelson concludes with the post-1965 arrival of Chinese immigrants from Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and many regions of mainland China.

Down to Earth: The Territorial Bond in South China

This collection of essays comprises a series of historical and ethnographic studies of the Pearl River Delta from late imperial times through the 1940’s. All the essays draw on field experience, and attempt to reconstruct the civilizing process in south China in the late imperial period in which the local inhabitants, both elites and commoners, used symbolic and instrumental means to become part of Chinese culture and polity, arguing that local society in the Delta was integrated into the Chinese state through a series of changes that involved constant redefinition of lineages, territories, and ethnic identities.

Village Life in Hong Kong

This book explores the cultural traditions of Cantonese villagers who first settled in South China’s Pearl River Delta during the Tang and Song dynasties (10th to 12th centuries). Two villages, in particular, are featured in this book: San Tin and Ha Tsuen, homes (respectively) of the Man and Teng lineages. In the 60s and 70s, village life revolved around the performance of expensive and time-consuming rituals associated with birth, marriage, and ancestor worship. Many of the rituals and social activities described in this book are no longer performed in the New Territories, or in adjacent regions of Guangdong province. The physical landscape has also changed dramatically in recent decades.

Guangdong and Chinese Diaspora: The Changing Landscape of Qiaoxiang

By focusing on Guangdong, this book argues that not all Chinese diasporic communities are the same in terms of mentality and orientation, and that their connections to the ancestral homeland vary from one community to another. Taking the two Cantonese-speaking localities of Panyu and Xinyi, Yow Cheun Hoe examines the hierarchy of power and politics of these two localities in terms of their diasporic kinsfolk in Singapore and Malaysia, in comparison with their counterparts in North America and Hong Kong. The book suggests that since 1978 business calculation and economic rationale are some of the key motivating factors in determining the destination and degree of diasporic engagement.

Pacific Crossing: California Gold, Chinese Migration, and the Making of Hong Kong

This book charts the rise of Chinese Gold Mountain firms engaged in all kinds of transpacific trade, especially the lucrative export of prepared opium and other luxury goods. It attempts to examine the relationship between Hong Kong and emigration from different vantage points- the Chinese emigrants, not only as laborers, but also as traders, entrepreneurs, and investors. In presenting Hong Kong as an “in-between place” of repeated journeys and continuous movement, this book tries to clarify how deeply embedded Hong Kong was in the lives of individual migrants and the Chinese diaspora as a whole.
