Ancient texts are vital to the heritage of Chinese culture. Each version is more than just a copy; it’s a record of history and a link between generations.
As Huang Yongnian wrote in The Study of Ancient Text Editions, “As long as the book itself is an ancient text, any reprinting, recarving, photocopying, or typesetting—no matter the binding or format—is a version of that text.” He also said, “As long as humanity exists, China’s ancient texts will keep being reprinted. New versions will always appear.”
Since woodblock printing became widespread, Chinese books have taken many forms: woodblock editions, movable type prints, hand-written manuscripts, and editions with notes and corrections. From early printing to modern facsimiles, each step reflects the era’s technology and craftsmanship. Whether it’s finely engraved Song editions, widely circulated prints from later dynasties, or today’s digital versions—every edition tells its own story.
These works are more than research objects; they show how Chinese civilization continues to thrive. Through these rare editions, we invite you to journey through time and feel the living power of the written word.
